The best list youll ever make to be more effective

The best list youll ever make to be more effectiveThe best list youll ever make to be more effectiveWe all have to-do lists, project objectives, metrics and planners to help keep us on track in our daily lives. Each year we set high expectations and even with these tools we find ourselves frustrated because we dont have the structure, systems, or accountability in place to achieve our goals. Couple that with doubt and indecision and you have a perfect recipe for anxiety. In the worst case this leads to action paralysis.Lets talk about the best case. Most people know what they need to do to be happy, effective and thrive just leid how to do it or what to do with doubt and fear. We spend enough time telling ourselves how we are not equipped to succeed and armoring up against failure by being risk averse. We wallow proficiently on what it is we need to do but spend less time feeling what it would be like to actually live the dream and executing a plan to get there. Guarding against dang er is how we have evolved as a species and not become extinct. We are Jedis at searching the environment for danger. We are not innately good at promoting ourselves into opportunity. Opportunity isnt essential to stay alive. Staying safe is. Lets reverse the pattern. The purpose of creating this list is 1) to give you definition around the areas where you thrive so that you can spend more time there especially when challenged, and 2) to build self-awareness around opportunities for growth that increase your executive presence and effectiveness. The best list youll ever make to be more effectiveCreate two columns, side by side, on a sheet of paper numbered one to 10. A word document is good for this exercise so that you may modify it as time goes on.FIRST COLUMN Label this I AM THISThink of a time from your childhood when you were at your very best happy, included, a star.Write down 3 words that describe who you were in that situation. What were you doing, thinking and feeling and how w ere you behaving? This should reflect what you exhibit or the feel when you are NOT leading from that point of strength. If your point of strength is Tenacious what are you doing when you dont feel that? Weak? Ineffective? Examples for NOT THAT words are Threatened, Criticized, Afraid of ____, Distracted, Losing Control, Abandoned, Disappointed, Challenged. The list on the l eft is who you truly are at your core. This list on the right is what happens to you when you dont feel that way. Knowledge is power so be honest when you create the list. Now when you feel one of the negative feelings or exhibit one of the negative behaviors from the second column revisit the first column to see precisely what you need to focus on to get back to a position of strength. Five scientific ways you can make your brain agile

Five scientific ways you can make your brain agileFive scientific ways you can make your brain agileWhat we know from neuroscience is this to keep working, the brain needs exercise. It needs variation on daily habits, music, and other stimulation to keep healthy. The problem routine takes over. We walk through the same doors every day, eat similar meals, see similar people, touch similar devices. Its easy to feel like youre going through the motions, rather than challenging yourself and your brain with new, engaging tasks.Heres how to keep your brain sharp.Immerse yourself in a hobbyIf you dont have a hobby, get one. It keeps your brain active without adding negative stress, and it gives you something to be proud of.Catherine Holecko writes about finding a hobby that suits you well in a post for Readers Digest.Lets clear this up right away Finding time for a hobby is totally worth it, especially if you feel busy or stressed. Losing yourself in a project you love gives your brain a bre ak from whatever else is bugging you. And working hard on a project boosts self-worth. You feel proud of what youre doing and how youre spending your time. Passive activities, like watching TV or surfing the Web, dont offer the same benefits. Ideally, a hobby gives you escapism (like TV does), but also lets you pursue a passion and feel a sense of purpose. Most hobbies build your community, too, connecting you with friends, new and old, who share your interest, Holecko writes.Switch things up and use repetitionThe Mayo Clinic provides information on why being mentally active can help with loss of memory.Just as physical activity helps keep your body in shape, mentally stimulating activities help keep your brain in shape - and might keep memory loss at bay. Do crossword puzzles. Play bridge. Take alternate routes when driving. Learn to play a musical instrument. Volunteer at a local school or community organization, the site says. How to achieve this Dont get stuck in the same old pa tterns.A Harvard Health Publications post shows how to keep your mind sharp, including this strategy. When you want to remember something youve just heard, read, or thought about, repeat it out loud or write it down. That way, you reinforce the memory or connection. For example, if youve just been told someones name, use it when you speak with him or her So, John, where did you meet Camille? the post says.Get some exerciseYour brain works better if you nurture the body around it as much as you can. Anyone who likes running or swimming knows that those activities offer us crucial time to think and help us generate new ideas.Justin Rhodes, an associate prof of psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, answers a question about being able to think better while working out or taking a walk in a post on Scientific American.Part of the reason exercise enhances cognition has to do with blood flow. Research shows that when we exercise, blood pressure and blood flow increas e everywhere in the body, including the brain. More blood means more energy and oxygen, which makes our brain perform better. Rhodes writes. In fact, walking to think was so effective that the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs used it to become more effective at his job.Engage the left and right sides of the bodyGeil Browning writes about this neat trickin an Inc. article.Any activities involving interaction between the left and right sides of the body will stimulate the right and left hemispheres of the brain and allow them to communicate better. This could be as simple as touching your left knee with your right hand. Think of these as good warm-up exercises. Every workshop that I facilitate begins with these exercises. And if I had my way, every part would begin their workday with a few brain gym moves. In addition to just being good for your brain, it helps you to learn and retain information. This is especially helpful given that these days each one of us is bombarded with messages from all directions. Browning writes.Certain activities can help you keep your brain sharp during the daily grind. Why not adopt them now and see if your thinking seems clearer?

The Beretta M9 Pistol Is Replaced By Sig Sauer P320

The Beretta M9 Pistol Is Replaced By Sig Sauer P320The Beretta M9 Pistol Is Replaced By Sig Sauer P320The U.S. Military does not make major moves like changing handguns very often. In fact, there have only been three primary weapons used by the military for the past 100 years. The M1911 (.45 caliber) had been in service since World War I, through the Korean War, through World War II, as well as Vietnam War and into the early 1980s when the M9 Beretta started the handgun contract. Now, Sig Sauer is rolling out its modular M17 and M18 (compact version) into the 21st century. New Modular Sig Suaer Replaces M9 Beretta After 35 years, formerly the M9 Beretta, a 9mm handgun made in Italy, was the weapon of choice for the military since 1982. A new contract has been granted to the German company Sig Sauer for its more advanced modular handgun system called the P320.Also, a 9mm NATO handgun, however, the modular capabilities allow it to be configured to shoot .357, and .40 caliber sized ammunition. The interchangeable grips allow for all hand sizes to find the perfect fit for shooting the weapon ambidextrously. The Army will be purchasing up to 500,000 of the new Sig Sauer P320 which has been thoroughly vetted by gun experts since it has appeared on the market since 2014.Sig Sauer contract could be worth up to $500 million with all the weapons and parts being made in the manufacturing plant in the United States (New Hampshire). In November 2017, members of the Army received the first P320 handguns which will be designated the M17 and M18 pistols. This first batch went to the 101st Airborne. Now, all combat units carry the M4 as a primary weapon and a secondary handgun.Within the next few years, all Army units will be replacing the M9 with the M17. What Else Does the P320 Have? One of the key features of the P320 is an internal stainless steel frame and control unit.Rust has been a problem with weapon systems of the past, especially when exposed to salt water. The weapon also has an ambidextrous slide release (one on each side of the pistol). Modular weapon system means, the fire control unit allows the computer-nutzer to interchange differently-sized slide assembly or polymer grip frame modules as well as chambering conversions to adapt the gun to the individual user and address different needs (larger caliber ammo, hand size, etc.). One of the soldier friendly features is the P320 can be cleaned and field stripped with no tools. There are four side slides on the weapon allowing for a variety of rail mounted laser sights, tactical lights, and other accessories. Breaking With A 35 Year History As recent at 2009, Beretta had secured a contract worth $200 million to supply the U.S. military with 450,000 of the handguns through the year 2015. However, from 2015 2017 the contract was open for competition and finally after a long and drawn out bureaucratical mess, the Department of Defense decided to break ties with Beretta and accept the S ig Sauer proposal. How significant is it that the U.S. military change course with its selected firearm? The Beretta (M9) pistol was originally selected as the main handgun of the U.S. Army in the late 1980s.Beretta, in fact, a few years earlier was the replacement weapons manufacturer to the M1911 handgun that was originally adopted by the U.S. Army in 1911.The Beretta pistol was praised for its accuracy and the fact that its magazine holds 15 rounds and that each bullet is 9 millimeters in size. These specifications complied with standardization of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military alliance that the U.S. belongs to. Problems and Controversy With Previous Handgun The Beretta M9 pistol has encountered problems and been criticized by some in the military. During the early 1990s, the pistol encountered mechanical defects. Specifically, the springs in the guns magazine malfunctioned. Use of the Beretta was limited within the military after problems with easil y rusting magazines and springs after getting wet.If wet with salt water, it was not long before rust was part of the weapon and needed to be cleaned immediately. This is largely due to the fact that the U.S. Army did not purchase magazines directly from Beretta, the guns manufacturer. In several cases, magazines have had to be replaced on the M9 pistol.Despite these setbacks, the M9 and M9A1 continued to be the primary sidearm of American soldiers until 2017. The Sig P320 is not without its issues. There have been accidently firings of the weapon when dropped on the ground. In fact, a few police departments placed the weapon on hold until Sig has corrected the problem. In August of 2017, Sig Sauer has started to correct the problem. As of July 2019, the U.S. Army approved Full werkstoff Release (FMR) of its new 9mm Modular Handgun Sig Sauer M17 / M18.Nearly 60,000 have been delivered to military armories so far and more than 350,000 of the pistols will be delivered throughout the n ext several years. The adoption of the M17 and M18 Sig Sauer is military wide with all services making the change.

Invite them to your company for a tour or to have lunch with a top executive and a select group of other employees - including people in their peer group, if possible. You can offer a look at your company culture and explain why your business is the right choice for them. The bottom line You cant just do the college job fair circuit and expect to fill your near-term hiring needs, let alone build a pipeline of future tauglichkeit hires.HIRING? WE CAN HELPOffer internship opportunitiesInternship programs require time and effort to execute well, but they are without question one of the most effective campus recruitment techniques. Not all internships result in a full-time hire, of course. But they are still a great way for your business to form a professional relationship with a college student who might become an employee sometime in the future - or at least would be likely to recommend your company to peers in their network who are looking for employment.Running a well-planned and challenging internship program can also help you foster goodwill with leading colleges and universities, which are always looking to help their students gain real-world work experience.Take a long-term viewCampus recruitment requires commitment and a multipronged approach. Its critical to develop and maintain relationships - not just with students but also professors, administrators and others. Building these relationships, and awareness about your company and what you have to offer to aspiring professionals, takes time. Theres no getting around it.Be sure to devote your best resources to the task of campus recruitment if you want to see a good return on your investment. You want college seniors to interact with people who are genuinely enthusiastic about your business and can speak articulately about why a new graduate would want to launch a career at your firm. Remember, in todays highly competitive market, its just as important for an employer to make a good impression on a top candidate as it is for a potential hire to demonstrate why they are the best fit for the job.Ideally, youll introduce entry-level candidates to employees who have walked a path similar to the one theyre about to embark on - for example, someone who joined your firm right after college and is now working at the middle-management level. Its important for college students to see a bit of themselves in the people trying to recruit them. It can help them to visualize how they, too, might build a future at your company. How to Write a Resume Step #4 Design Well!

How to Write a Resume Step #4 Design Well! How to Write a Resume Step #4 Design Well! Most published resume writing advice is focused on content. In this 4th post in my How to Write a Resume series, I want to get you to focus on something I think is every bit as important resume design. Its not just what you say, its how you say it Have you ever been to the website of someone you consider an expert and found an ugly, outdated, template-based site that looks like the experts 12 year-old nephew designed it on a rainy weekend? Whenever that happens to me, I instantly think less of that persons expertise. The bad design screams out of date to me. If their web design is so outdated, what am I to make of their advice? First impressions count. We all know that. You wouldnt go to a job interview in a t-shirt and sweatpants, so dont send a resume that is badly laid out. It makes exactly the same impression. Design with the Strategy in Mind But theres another aspect to a well-designed resume and that goes back to what I discussed in my last post strategy. If youve followed my steps. You have developed a strategy for your resume. You know your value proposition and you have decided on content that will help you communicate that value proposition. This is where design comes in now you must choose a resume design that reinforces your strategy. If youve decided that the most important thing employers need to know is that you have developed successful brands for leading Fortune 500 packaged goods companies, then perhaps you should create a bold headline that communicates exactly that fact. You might also choose to bold the names of the Fortune 500 companies whenever they appear throughout your resume. If a sales rep decides that his consistent ability to increase sales is his value proposition, then he should make sure that sales numbers jump off the page all the way through the resume. That can be done with selective bolding or colors and lots of white space. (White space is key to making sure that key information is visible). Content is Not King When it comes to resume writing, content is only one piece of the puzzle. The best content in the world wont work if people cant read it easily, or if information is bunched up on the page so that they dont even see the most important facts. Writing a great resume is a challenge. Balancing design and content, knowing exactly what to include and what to leave out, targeting every word to your selected audience all these are tricky. But when you get it right, the rewards come in the form of phone calls and interviews. Its worth spending some time to get to that point! In my next post, Ill talk copy writing and show you how to choose (and arrange) words that sell. If youd like me to send you an email notification when it goes up, just leave me your email address here. Meantime, if you want to follow my resume writing system to create your own resume, check out my self-study course The DIY Guide to Writing a Killer Resume. How to handle every Online Resume Builders Challenge with ease using These Tips Resume Builders Evolution: From Builded in Word to LinkedIn Resumes Expert wisdom Interview with Maria Cordi Interview with Laura Garbers Interview with Sumit Kishore Interview with Caroline De Kimpe Do resume builders make resume writing easier? by Jennifer Bouley Writing resumes for even the best of writers can present its challenges. However, with the right insight and knowledge, along with correct targeting, formulation, and understanding the perspective audience, you can have a resume that gets you noticed by the right person. With the world of internet, you can have thousands of options available to you from samples, professional resume or cv writers, and online software that helps you to construct a perfect resume. So how to you evaluate which process is best for you and your situation? Understanding how a resume builder works An automatic resume builder is essentially a document scanner that uses processes to help you choose better words to write with while suggesting various phrases based on your chosen field of work. Resume builders also require that you take part in the process, which means that you should have a good understanding of what information to put forth to make your resume stand out amongst others. Resume builders can also help prepare an easy to follow formatted resume. Another thing to keep in mind when using a free online resume builder is how current the format is, as suggestions on what type of resume is the best can change quite frequently. Resumes also should be adaptable to the scanning processes that are used with applicant tracking systems. When picking a resume builder, you need to make sure that you get one that is easy to update and will supply you with a document that can be edited. Advantages and Disadvantages When determining if you should work with an automated resume builder lets consider some of the pros: Formatting â€" When you use an automated resume builder one thing for sure is that your resume will often come out looking organized and professional. The font will be consistent, there should be limited inconsistencies, and the information will be displayed in an easy to follow format. Many resume builders also provide you with various templates to choose from. Easy to use â€" When it comes to using a program that helps you to go through the resume writing process, it can take away the daunting task of where do I start? Resume builders are often built with information as to what needs to be included in the resume and how much information should be included. Some resume builders might even provide you with samples of what a resume should look like content wise when you have completed your document. Industry specific â€" Resume builders can also provide you with predetermined resume formats that are specific to your industry. For example, if you are an engineer more comprehensive resume builders might have suggested phrases and formats for you to choose from based on your industry. When it comes to determining if you want to use an automated resume builder, there are cons to consider as well: What to say â€" Since the resume builder is run by a computer, it is not a person and will not be able to provide you with what to say all the time. You will need to be able to write convincing statements that speak to your work and what you will be able to provide the employers with. While resume builders can be a great resource when it comes to general statements and some industry specific statements, it will not always be able to provide you with how to highlight your most crucial points. For example, if you worked on a company-specific project and brought about dramatic and progressive results and are not sure how to state it, the resume builder might not always have the best answer for you. General statements â€" When using an online resume builder, you need to be careful not to depend on it too much. Your own judgment needs to come into play. This means that you will need to take the time to ensure that your resume does not come across as being like the samples on the website! Industry communication â€" For industry specific communication and phrases you will need to be an expert in this aspect. While an automated resume builder might have examples, which include several statements of your industry, they could be too general or might not speak directly to the company and the work you did. With this being said, your work descriptions for the majority will have your expertise and knowledge. This is where sentence structure and the point you want to portray to the reader might become challenging. When it comes to working with an online resume builder you need to know what areas you are struggling with and what areas you are good with. If you triumph in content, but struggle with formatting, then an automated resume builder might be for you, if it is content that you struggle with then working with a professional resume writer might be an avenue you want to explore. What Recruiters Think of Resumes Created Using Popular Resume Builder Apps Prepared by Carlyn Rumohr After graduating from University with a shiny Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a Human Resources concentration I thought I was ready to take on the world. I had a degree, I was 22; how hard could getting a “real job” be? It took me 117 versions of my resume, 23 interviews and two whole years before landing a permanent role. I considered changing careers, working as a server forever and selling myself short in my ambitions. I continued to fire out resume after resume and received continuous rejection back… or nothing at all. I kept wondering what I was doing wrong? Sure, there was room for improvement. But let me rephrase. What was I doing right? As it turns out, I was a candidate among hundreds with a basic resume I had created on a resume template. I fired it off to every open job position with the keywords “Human Resources” in the title- sometimes even if they didn’t. Here’s what I learned: if you want to stand out in the job market you have to be an individual. Nothing about my copy and paste resume was unique and more than anything it lacked a voice. My voice. I was using canned phrases that I thought sounded professional. My resume looked like everyone else. I sounded like everyone else. Now, in real life in my “real job” I have gained more insight into what recruiters really think about resumes created using resume templates. You Are Not a Template (a.k.a.Who Are You As a Candidate) On days that I screen countless resumes it becomes so obvious when candidates are using resume templates. If a resume template site advertises “No Writing Needed” or “Resumes That Write Themselves” be wary. Who are you as a candidate when a resume robot wrote your content for you? I’d rather individuals took the time to stop and think about what truly makes them stand out as a candidate. Templates don’t always offer the ability to include the accomplishments and projects that truly define who you were within an organization and what mark you left there. This is one area I struggled with when I was first applying for jobs. I used the same resume for all the positions I applied for. It was a very basic template I found on Pages and, as you might suspect, was not unique at all. I filled in the required boxes job, year, company and off I went. Create Your “Brand” Think of your entry into the job “market as an opportunity for marketing yourself to potential employers. If I see a resume and cover letter that are cohesive in design and formatting it really stands out for me. Keep in mind your industry and the level of professionalism required. If you are in a creative industry you may have greater leeway in this area. When I “rebranded” my resume I started to get real traction as a candidate. Resume templates can be great for ideas but take the time to create your own formatting. Keep it consistent across your documents. Your resume, cover letter, and reference documents should have a sense of cohesion in font choices, colors and headers. Use Reverse Chronological Order It’s true, recruiters will spend anywhere from 5-10 seconds deciding whether or not to further screen the candidates. If your resume is not easily scanned in this timeframe it could lead to you being unnecessarily screened out. Not all resume templates use the chronological format. Make sure that your resume can be read like a story of your employment from most recent to past positions. It can be frustrating to a recruiter if a candidate’s timeline simply does not make sense. Take time to ensure that your dates are in order and are easily legible at a glance. When dates and employers are left-justified it makes scanning a resume a breeze. I can tell within seconds if a candidate is someone with relevant qualifications that I’d like to learn more about. Having your work history straight forward is crucial. Numbers, Percentages and Stats, Oh My! Anything you can quantify in your resume is gold. Resume templates may or may not prompt you to include your accomplishments. Wherever possible demonstrate improvement you have made with percentages, reductions in costs, outcomes etc. Your resume will be heads and shoulders above others that lack this detail. It’s easy to include strong adjectives but measurable and tangible evidence truly demonstrates results. Uncluttering Is Key Go easy on bold, italics and underlining. It may seem like using formatting can really help to highlight important dates and ideas but keep in mind, less is more. I’ve found resume builders to be helpful for organizing space. If you’re going to choose a template for inspiration, opt for a simple, uncluttered format. Read Your Target Job Postings! The first time I attempted to get a “real job” I trusted that my template would do the trick. I skimmed over it, I thought it looked presentable and then proceeded to fire it off in every direction. I can’t stress enough how limiting it is using a resume template for this aspect of your job search. The biggest thing I’ve learned is that resumes must be tailored for each and every position you are applying for. It is time-consuming but so worth it. ATS systems scan uploaded documents for target keywords and systematically determine whether or not a candidate is a match. Sometimes its best to just scrap everything and build it back up again. You deserve the best resume possible. Creating an original resume is hard work but trust, it’s worth it. How to Handle Every Online Resume Builders Challenge with Ease Using These Tips Whether it is creating one from scratch, hiring a professional resume writer or using a resume builder, the choice is dependent on experience, time and budget. Using Photoshop to Land Your Dream Job

Using Photoshop to Land Your Dream Job Using Photoshop to Land Your Dream Job I love these types of stories because, sadly, they aren’t very common. In fact, a Gallup study found that 70 percent of the American workforce is disengaged and uninspired at work. The study found that, “…although they put time and effort into their work, they dont have energy or passion.” Who has been there and done that? I’m pretty sure just about everyone. So, again, when I do hear of people actually being able to do what they love it inspires me. I mean, who doesn’t want to feel like they aren’t “at work” or “on the clock” because they’re just so passionate about what they’re accomplishing? A great example of this comes from a recent story on Flickr’s blog called, “Imaginative photographer lands world-tour job at Coke.” The title already sounds much more appealing than what most of us do from 9-5pm. The story is about Joel Robison, a Canadian photographer who combines photography with Photoshop to create some amazing images. I looked at his Flickr page, Boy_Wonder, and was pretty impressed. As the story goes, Robison ventured into photography after becoming a teacher post college graduation. He said he didn’t feel connected to his current role, especially to the creative part of his mind, and he did not feel inspired. So, what did he do? Robison bought a camera, downloaded Adobe Photoshop and began to infuse reality with fantasy. Stemming from his love of Disney, his pictures always infused a real element- himself, for example- with a fantasy-like setting or objects added in through Photoshop. One day, the story explains, Robison uploaded a picture of the classic Coke bottles in the snow with himself drinking one in the distance to his Flickr account. Although a friend suggested he send the image to Coca-Cola, he laughed it off. Yet, this image and other Coke-related photography would change Robison’s life forever. A Coke representative not only asked if the company could use his image on its Twitter page, Robison was also asked to moderate Coca-Cola’s Flickr community for over a year. Talk about your passion leading you to career happiness; but it doesn’t end there. The story explains: “In 2013, they offered me a role on the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour,” Joel says. “It’s a worldwide tour, led by Coca-Cola and FIFA, taking the FIFA World Cup Trophy on a world tour of 90 countries. And they offered me the role of photographer and voice of social media. I was shocked.” “It totally changed the course of my life,” Joel admits. “I was able to quit my job and accept photography as my full-time career, and I haven’t looked back since. It’s been non-stop, I feel more passionate about it every day, and I feel like I am allowed to share with the world what I see, and I feel very supported in that.” Awesome story, right? It led me to wonder how many more people could possibly follow in Robison’s footsteps. No, not every photographer will get scooped up by a major company, but that’s just one way to turn your passion(s) into your career. Robison was a teacher and knew this wasn’t the right fit. He decided to open the door to his passions and it paid off in the end. How many of us have yet to even open the door? Sure, it won’t be an overnight jump from following your passion to instant success (monetary stability), but it’s important to at least take the first step. If you know deep down your current role leaves you disengaged and uninspired, make some changes. Start with examining your passions and what type of careers they can be utilized in. Then, slowly but surely, make the time to develop your interests each day. If you truly enjoy painting, take an art class. Or if writing is your thing, join a writer’s club. Regularly working on things you’re passionate about keeps you motivated and pressing toward your goals. I’m sure Robison would’ve loved to work for a major company one day, but he didn’t start sending his photos to businesses right away. He found an outlet that offered him exposure- Flickr. What outlets or mediums can you use to display your talents? For example, creating social media accounts is a great way to display your passions. And as you keep working toward what you truly love, eventually you’ll be able to turn what you love into what you do (for a living). But, if you’re worried that following your passions won’t pay the bills (and this is a very reasonable concern), taking some time to regularly concentrate on the things that you love will still bring benefits. You will find yourself more inspired, excited and motivated as you develop your talents and skills outside the office- while still being able to pay your bills. So, what’s the moral to the story? Whether it’s creating a Flickr account, using Photoshop or selling your hand-carved statues after work, there are many ways to turn your passion(s) into your dream job. But it all starts with recognizing what you love and making the decision to take the first step in pursuing this area.

Addressing Mail Correctly for Deployed Service Members

Addressing Mail Correctly for Deployed Service Members Addressing Mail Correctly for Deployed Service Members Something as simple as adding the name of the destination country to an address can delay the delivery of mail to service members overseas. In fact, it can triple shipping fees if addressing the package is not done correctly for APO, FPO, and DPO mailing addresses.   It is a problem that the military / government postal system encounters daily. To alleviate this situation, the following site has been developed.   help is needed from the family and friends of deployed service members. Senders stateside are actually slowing the delivery of the mail by not properly addressing letters and packages. The sender needs to know the name of the country and the name of the base camp where a service member is stationed are incompatible with regulated military addresses. Guide Note: In simple terms, what this means is one should not put the country or base in the address when sending mail to deployed service members or service members assigned overseas. Correct Method GEN John DoePSC 4321, Box 54321APO AE 09345-4321 Incorrect Method GEN John Doe317 Provisional SquadronBoondocks Air BaseKuwaitAPO AE 09345-4321 This will  cause the letter to be misrouted through civilian international mail channels, causing a huge delay in delivery. Also, if you are purchasing something online, most shipping software for the website will default as a foreign order and charge you for overseas foreign rates, versus domestic fare.   The U.S. Postal Service system has automated sorting machines that read the address and determine whether a letter or package goes through military postal channels, regular USPS or international postal channels. By writing Kuwait or Iraq on a letter or package it is routed through civilian mail channels rather than military mail. This is attributable to the sorting machine’s inability to discern whether or not the letter is intended to reach an Army or Fleet Post Office address. A recent case of this common mistake occurred when Soldiers’ mail was found in the post office in downtown Baghdad rather than being sent to where the Soldiers were deployed. There have been a number of reported cases of internationally channeled military mail being opened, searched through and/or tampered with a matter that could potentially be identified as a danger to both individual and unit security. It is important for loved ones who write or send gifts to deployed military members understand the step-by-step procedures and current updates made to the military postal service. Knowing the latest rules can help decrease the time needed to process the mail particularly in a war zone. Prior to a letter or package even reaching such far outposts and its final destination, it must undergo a series of transfers from the local town post office, the states mail facility, and international gateways.   The facilities of the United States Post Office not only handle international mail but also all of the international mail of the armed services. A small military contingent operates with USPS at these gateways to assist USPS in routing mail to overseas points. These Joint Military Postal Activities work to assure that USPS arranges, assembles and consolidates the letters and parcels to the correct locations, then dispatches correctly on commercial airlines. Both military personnel and USPS civilian employees work together to get the mail to its proper destinations. At this point, the mail is loaded onto the aircraft for delivery to to a variety of regions around the world notated by the suffices after American Post Officer (APO) or Foreign Post Office (FPO). These are the suffices and their meanings: AE â€" Armed Forces EuropeAA â€" Armed Forces AmericasAP â€" Armed Forces Pacific Mail sent to an APO/FPO address will go to California, New York, or Florida depending upon the suffix. Once it arrives at these locations, the US Post Office has delivered their package. It is now the Military Post Office job and their contracted airlines  to get the package to an overseas member. That is why postage for overseas military members only costs domestic rates. Once the shipments arrive at the main transportation hubs in country, contracted drivers are standing by to drive the mail to the receiving camp’s main post office. The departures depend on local ground dangers, highway problems and the force protection that must accompany the convoys. The day the mail is delivered to the main post office is not necessarily the same day that all units arrive to retrieve their mail. There are literally hundreds of units situated long distances from the main bases or camps that are unable to get a hold of their mail  everyday, for (vital) reasons such as operational security. The routine of preparing, organizing and delivering mail to service members deployed to the  Middle East  is a method that the U.S military postal service evaluates and takes steps to enhance on a day-to-day basis.

Support Your Teen in Their First Job

Support Your Teen in Their First Job Support Your Teen in Their First Job You helped them learn to walk, ride their bikes, become good sports and confident students. Now you have a whole new challenge on your hands, helping your teen acclimate to his or her first job. Accepting a role in the workforce is an important step for a young person. Working will give your teen a chance to earn and save her/his own money, and it will introduce her/him to completely new situations that demands an increased degree of responsibility.   While this will sometimes be stressful for your teen, it will also be great preparation for the challenges of college and future employment.  Although you’ve had a more direct role in your teen’s activities in the past, this is an area where your daughter or son has to absorb the responsibility. If s/he is sick and has to call in, that responsibility is on her/his shoulders alone. If your teen has to field an irate customer’s complaints, that unpleasant task is hers/his to manage (and hopefully s/he has a good supervisor who is right there to help). Because your involvement is limited to acting as a guide and sounding board (and probably a ride), coupled with the fact that your teen will be generating income, this is a particularly important right of passage for your teen. Here are three  ways you can help from the sidelines. Find the right fit Talk with your teen about what s/he would like to do, and help her/him find a job that maximizes her/his comfort and skills. In order to be successful, your teen has to be working someplace that s/he feels comfortable. Simply Hired has plenty of jobs posts in retail; child, pet or older adult care; restaurant work; as well as other jobs such as libraries, fast food restaurants, etc. Talk with your teen about what s/he can picture doing and then work together to find the right opportunity. Help your teen anticipate what to expect Your teen is developing a sense of professionalism, and s/he is going to need your help with that. There are certain aspects of this which are going to be no brainers to instillclearly s/he has to be dependable and always report on time, in uniform, etc. Undoubtedly, s/he has to follow the manager’s directions, be polite to customers and do the work the job requires.   But there are other aspects of the job that your teen will need your help withlike how to say “no” if s/he is asked to work more hours than is manageable. Your teen isn’t used to interacting with adults as peers, and s/he is going to need your advice for how to be respectful but at the time time be firm about boundaries. Help your teen identify deal breakers Impatient customers, demanding supervisors and difficult coworkers all come with the territory. Your teen will need to learn how to gracefully handle these challenges in order to do her or his job well. But there are somethings that your teen needs to know that s/he doesn’t have to put up with at work. S/he doesn’t have to put up with bullying, belittling, or offensive treatment. S/he doesn’t have to put up with sexual harassment, illegal discrimination, or unwanted advances or attention. Your teen doesn’t have to stay at a job where s/he feels uncomfortable. It’s important to make that clear to your daughter or son, because this experience involves some new dynamics that are not intuitive to young workers. Although your teen is going to exercise a lot of autonomy in this new role, s/he also needs your support and your guidance. Like so many other “firsts” the trick is to be carefully watching without looking like you’re watching. So make sure to set your teen up for success and then keep the lines of communication open.

Cloud Engineer Job and Salary

Cloud Engineer Job and Salary Cloud Engineer Job and Salary It could make sense for many IT professionals as more companies move their data to the cloud and shift spending in that direction. For most companies, cloud computing is now a critical aspect of the technology stack. Whether it’s part of a hybrid solution or a full-fledged migration to hosted services, the cloud has become a cornerstone of digital life. It’s a big move from traditional enterprise infrastructures, where on-premise servers handled most tasks and stored all the data. Because this changeover has been so sudden and all-encompassing, it has left many businesses with a skills gap they’re now struggling to fill with professionals with cloud experience, including the role of cloud engineer.   Across the country, this demand has created a large number of cloud engineer jobs and cloud-related positions. In our recent Jobs and AI Anxiety report, 72 percent of the managers surveyed said they’re already using the cloud, and an additional 23 percent plan to make the switch in the next three to five years. And according to the latest State of U.S. Tech Hiring research, three of the top five positions were related to distributed systems: cloud security, cloud architecture and cloud engineer. Learning how to be a cloud engineer could be a smart move for people in traditional IT roles. But job seekers have to be willing to learn these new skills even if it means pursuing training on their own. Getting started as a cloud engineer Moving from a traditional IT specialty to a cloud-based system requires a mindset change. Often, this is the biggest hurdle for tech professionals because there are some fundamental differences. For example, there’s more focus on automating infrastructure in the cloud, and it can be a big change not logging into a server and doing everything manually.   To prepare for the move, consider these four areas to focus on: Cloud platforms - Many of the major platform providers offer free resources to give IT professionals a chance to practice. And practice you must. Make sure to try out more than one. The top ones today are Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. Many companies are starting to explore the use of multi-cloud environments as a way to manage fault tolerance, so knowledge of several platforms is a bonus.   APIs and web services - APIs (application programming interfaces) and web services are key to fundamental cloud architecture, so you’ll need to understand how they integrate with your company’s systems. You may also be required to build your own APIs or maintain those offered by your firm. There are a number of online courses about creating a RESTful API, which will give you an insight into both sides of the process.   Software configuration management (SCM) - SCM becomes more important than ever in a cloud-based environment. A cloud engineer should be familiar with some of the most common SCM tools, including Chef, Puppet and Ansible.   Agile development - If you’re not already Agile trained, get to know this methodology. The Scrum pillars of transparency, inspection and adaptation make Agile an ideal approach to the fluid and fast-moving world of cloud computing. Sites like Scrum Alliance and Agile Alliance will help you get started. Traditional IT roles that can translate to cloud careers What types of traditional IT positions are now “morphing” into cloud jobs in many organizations? Below are just three examples, along with details about core job responsibilities and starting compensation from the Robert Half Technology Salary Guide. To tailor the national average salary figures listed below and in the guide, use the local variances included in the guide. Systems engineer Systems engineers need in-depth technical knowledge of an employer’s software and hardware, as well as advanced analytical, troubleshooting and design skills. Employers generally prefer candidates with at least five years of experience working with the hardware and software systems used by the company, as well as a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Typical duties include: Developing, maintaining and supporting technical infrastructure, hardware and system software components Performing installation, maintenance and support of system software and hardware and user support Configuring, debugging and supporting multiple infrastructure platforms Performing high-level root-cause analysis for service interruption recovery and creating preventive measures The starting national average midpoint salary for a systems engineer is $103,000. For a career as a cloud engineer, in-demand skills that can increase starting compensation include cloud-relevant abilities such as virtualization and Linux/Unix administration. Because many organizations are only now making their first foray into the cloud, they need access to skilled IT talent that can help solve problems and innovate along their journey. The systems administrator role is changing dramatically because the cloud is commoditizing IT. For example, many systems administrators now need to learn programming languages like Python in order to interact with a cloud vendor’s APIs. Network engineer Network engineers must be detail-oriented and have in-depth knowledge of networking hardware and software. Typical job requirements are a bachelor’s degree in computer science or electrical engineering, and five or more years of experience in areas such as network design and implementation, security, and server and network infrastructure. Typical duties include: Engineering enterprise data, voice and video networks Establishing and operating network test facilities Maintaining a secure transfer of data to multiple locations via internal and external networks Working with vendors, clients, carriers and technical staff on network implementation, optimization and ongoing management Providing high-level support and technical expertise in networking technology The starting national average salary midpoint for a network engineer is $108,750. How do you build a career as a cloud networking engineer? In-demand skills that can increase starting compensation for this role include cloud-relevant abilities such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) administration. Networking in the cloud is very different from traditional networking. While a traditional network engineer needs to know everything about firewalls, switches, routers and other specific network components, cloud networking engineers focus more on network design, as most cloud providers offer networking as a service. Cloud engineers who specialize in networking might also be responsible for auditing the way that rules are applied in a cloud environment. Database administrator Database administrators need a strong technical foundation in database structure, configuration, installation and practice. Knowledge and experience in major relational database languages and applications, such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and IBM DB2, are typically required. Effective database administrators must have keen attention to detail, a strong customer service orientation and the ability to work as part of a team. Typical duties include: Managing, monitoring and maintaining company databases Making requested changes, updates and modifications to database structure and data Ensuring database integrity, stability and system availability Maintaining database backup and recovery infrastructure The starting national average salary midpoint for a database administrator is $97,250. To find a cloud engineer job specializing in databases, start by integrating in-demand skills that can increase starting compensation for this role. These include cloud-relevant abilities in the Hadoop framework and Oracle databases. With most cloud services, you don’t need to focus on setting up the database server. Database backup and recovery may also no longer be relevant to your domain. However, you may still need to do things like set up tablespaces, optimize queries, and evaluate and execute table structure changes. Cloud engineer salary Because this is a relatively new job title, there’s not much data about cloud engineer salary ranges. Looking at related jobs listed above and similar engineering roles in IT, a good estimate for a national median salary would be around $100,000 to $140,000. A cloud computing analyst, who designs, tests and deploys infrastructure for an existing cloud platform, can expect a starting salary of $94,500, according to the latest Salary Guide. Other hot cloud jobs: Cloud architect Cloud systems engineer Cloud developer Cloud security consultant Cloud support specialist Cloud applications engineer Cloud computing specialist DevOps cloud architect Cloud engineers are problem solvers Because some organizations are only now making their first foray into the cloud, they need skilled IT talent who can help solve problems and innovate as the company makes its journey. That’s why it’s essential for candidates vying for cloud jobs to be able to demonstrate that they’re capable of providing that type of support - even if their professional experience is deeply rooted in traditional IT. For example, take something that’s very cookie-cutter in the on-premises world - setting up a LAMP stack (open source web platform), for example - and think about how you’d approach it in a cloud environment. Then use available tools to actually do it so you know that it works. Cloud services will continue expanding and evolving, creating both new challenges and new opportunities. To be a successful cloud engineer, you need to combine a willingness to learn with a dogged determination to make things work.   Find a cloud engineer job Skilled cloud professionals are in demand across the United States.
